Multiple 911 calls starting pouring into the Saskatoon Fire Department around five o’clock Thursday afternoon about an apartment fire on the 100 block of Avenue U South. Dispatchers gathered critical information, directing firefighters to a believed unit of origin. While some fought the fire from outside, others were met with heavy smoke as they swept through the building. Two people were found in one unit and were evacuated. The origin of the fire was reached and the blaze was under control in less than 20 minutes from the time the first of the firefighters arrived on scene.
There were no injuries although 23 people have been displaced. The Canadian Red Cross helped find temporary accommodations. While the cause remains under investigation, an investigator is confident it started in the kitchen of one of the units. Damage is estimated at $125 thousand.
