Saskatchewan’s number of active COVID-19 cases may be low, but the province’s Chief Medical Health Officer is warning that being a part of a large gathering or rally, as was the case on Tuesday in Regina, increases the risk of transmitting the novel coronavirus.
Dr. Saqib Shahab says as many as 40 per cent of people are capable of being infected with COVID-19 at a large gathering or rally, yet have very mild or no symptoms of the virus. With more rallies, such as the one Tuesday in Regina, being planned, Shahab emphasizes that the current public health order calls for gatherings of no more than 10 people, with physical distancing of at least two metres between individuals. On June 8th, the allowed size limit for outdoor gatherings goes up to 30 people…but physical distancing rules still apply and are to be maintained at all times.
Organizers of any upcoming protests or rallies are encouraged to contact local health authorities for guidance while groups or individuals planning on taking part in an upcoming protest or rally should consult information on public health orders and gathering size limitations through the Government of Saskatchewan website.
