The Prime Minister is considering funding body cameras for police across Canada. He says he had a discussion with cabinet on Friday that will continue today [on] and he also spoke with commissioner Brenda Lucki of the RCMP. He says she assured him that she will use all available tools to take quick, solid action with respect to how her police force engages with black and Indigenous Canadians. One of those measures would be police using body cameras.
Trudeau says Ottawa is also committed to improving Indigenous policing. He is taking stock of reconciliation and he says this work will continue to accelerate the pace of change.
During his COVID-19 briefing, the PM was also asked about his attendance at a Black Lives Matter rally in Ottawa. The question was raised if he was setting a double standard, attending a rally while telling Canadians to follow public health guidelines about social distancing. Trudeau says it was important for him to attend.
In Saskatoon all police cruisers have a camera to record officers inside and out of the vehicle. Saskatoon police officers do not have body cameras.
