The Saskatoon Fire Department says when they were trying to get to a garage fire in the Adelaide/Churchill neighbourhood yesterday evening, a man stood in the road trying to impede their response to the fire in the 2-hundred block of Cairns Avenue.
The firefighter driving blew the air horn and navigated the fire engine around the man. Crews put out the fire at the garage as well as a nearby fence which caught fire.
While police were en route to the garage fire they got word someone was lighting garbage bins on fire nearby. The Fire Department says a homeowner’s household recycling bin, a couple blocks away, was set on fire but they had managed to put it out with a fire extinguisher.
Meanwhile, residents in the area, directed officers to a suspect hiding in the 23 hundred block of McKinnon Avenue South. Police allege the suspect still had a lighter in his hand.
A 27 year old man faces two counts of arson. The Saskatoon Fire Department estimates $10,000 damage in the fires.
