COVID-19 rocked new motor vehicle sales in Canada. Statistics Canada says, in March, sales fell nearly 49 per cent year-over-year in March and nearly 75 per cent in April. These were the two largest year-over-year decreases on record. In Saskatchewan, sales were steadily increasing prior to the pandemic. 3,079 units sold last December. By February, sales were at 3,525. But in March, that fell to 2,441 units, and then down to 1,827 in April.
Stats Canada says that, of the vehicles that sold in April across the country, the big sellers fell into an aggregate category that includes light trucks, heavy trucks, and buses.
They comprised about 81 per cent of the total new motor vehicle sales in April. Sales of passenger cars have been declining since 2015.
They decreased about 58 per cent year over year in March and about 83 per cent in April.
