The first official Saskatchewan Day celebrated as a statutory holiday was in 1975. The Minister of Labour at the time, Gordon Snyder, proposed that although many people already had the first Monday of August off, it should be recognized as a stat holiday. His reasoning was that our summers are short and we could use the day to enjoy what the province has to offer.
Some of the City’s facilities are closed including City Hall, the Public libraries, and Cosmo Civic Centre are closed. The Field House is closed for facility upgrades until the end of September. The other leisure centres are open, but classes are cancelled.
The City’s golf courses, the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo, Nutrien Playland at Kinsmen Park and the Remai Modern are open. City buses are operating with holiday service hours.
Both compost depots are open, as is the landfill and waste collections for your black, blue and green carts will take place as scheduled.
