The provincial government says it has introduced legislation to improve police oversight in Saskatchewan.
This comes as the world reacted to the death of an African American man, George Floyd, of Minneapolis by an officer who kept him in a choke hold for almost 9 minutes.
Protests and rallies have been held around the world, including 3 in Saskatoon.
Justice Minister and Attorney General, Don Morgan, says the changes include enhancements to the Investigation Observer process to make it more transparent and accountable.
Instead of an Investigation Observer appointed by the Deputy Minister of Justice where there has been a serious injury or death in relation to the actions of a police officer, the responsibility will be with the Public Complaints Commission.
The Chair of the PCC will publish online summaries from the result of the Investigation Observer reports.
The legislation also expands the role of the Investigation Observers to include investigations of sexual assaults and off-duty incidents involving police officers, and when the incident involves First Nations or Metis people, a second Investigation observer of that ancestry will be appointed.
