The Saskatchewan RCMP wants victims and survivors of domestic violence to know they can continue to rely on them for safety, 24/7.
This comes in response to the announcement that the provincial RCMP would not be participating in Clare’s Law, which is provincial legislation set to begin next Monday that allows police to disclose information which could help protect potential victims of interpersonal violence.
The RCMP statement says that they were involved in the planning for Clare’s Law from the beginning and continue to be supportive, but had said early on in the discussions that there may be some challenges with their participation because they are subject to federal privacy legislation.
They are looking into the matter and trying to figure out how to best support the objectives of Clare’s Law withing the obligations of the federal Privacy Act.
As well, the RCMP is implementing a process to ensure anyone who comes forward and is identified as being at risk, is safe and has access to Victim’s Services and other resources that can help.
