Prince Albert’s Mayor says City Council will consider buying 18 acres of serviced land for a new Aquatics and Arena recreation centre at Monday’s meeting.
The land is in the southeast portion of the city between Highway 3 and Marquis Road.
Greg Dionne says the City of Prince Albert’s application to the Canada Infrastructure Program was approved for $44-million of the $60-million project.
$24-million would come from the federal government, nearly $20-million from the province and the remainder from the city.
He emphasizes there would be no tax increase to fund the new recreation centre.
The land purchase would come from existing funds set aside in the Civic Facilities Reserve.
The centre would have 2 68-thousand square foot hockey rinks, seating about 800 people each and a 47-thousand square foot aquatic centre.
Dionne says they are exploring funding models for the second phase, which would be a 125-thousand square foot entertainment centre and area.
Phase 3 could include other development opportunities, possibly for a convention centre or a branch library.
