The Saskatoon Police Service is hoping to build a better relationship with the LGBTQ2SI community and Chief Troy Cooper says the first step is meeting with OUT Saskatoon later this week.
This comes after an alleged incident was highlighted in court about a police officer telling a gay man he would out him to his family.
Cooper says they are investigating what happened and what led up to what allegedly happened, and they also want to touch base with OUT Saskatoon, to talk about what that community needs in place to feel they are safe and being served by the police department.
Cooper understands it’s a relationship that has a dark history, so he says the Police Service needs to make sure the LGBTQ2SI community knows they are listening to them and are responsive to them, whether that means more education for officers, policy changes, or relationship building.
