Access to health care is a significant problem for one in five Canadians aged 55 and older. As the next federal election looms, an Angus Reid poll finds there is ample room for policy platforms based on improving health care delivery for an aging population. For those 55 and older, the perception that health care in their home province has deteriorated over the last 10 to 15 years, outpaces the view that it has improved. The only exception to that is Saskatchewan where 74 per cent of respondents felt the overall quality of care has either stayed the same or improved. A doctor shortage in the Atlantic Provinces is reflected in the finding that 35 per cent of respondents there reported having an access to health care issue. In Saskatchewan, 20 per cent report that problem. In terms of overall quality of care, 86 per cent of people surveyed in this province reported their experience has been good or very good.
