A 20 yard touchdown pass from Riley Hobbins to Sam Anderson in the fourth quarter completed the comeback as the Alumni beat the Saskatoon Hilltops 18-14 in the annual clash between current and former players.
Toppers running back coach Andre Lalonde got comeback started with a one yard plunge on the last play of the first half cutting the Hilltops lead to 14-7 at the break. Kicker Rod Janzen accounted for the rest of the scoring with a 27 yard field goal in the third quarter and and a long punt single in the fourth in addition to converting both touchdowns.
The Hilltops stormed out to a 14-0 lead with Tyler Herman capping a seven-play 75-yard drive on their first possession with a 14 yard touchdown strike to Carter Norrish. Herman also connected on a 103 yard pass-and-run touchdown with Ethan Godson in the second quarter after the defense stopped the Alumni on a goal-line stand.
Herman remained poised after tossing an interception earlier in the second quarter to hook up with Godson for the biggest play of the game.
The Toppers rotated in a sideline full of players during the contest which was spirited throughout.
The victory is the fifth straight for the Alumni.
The Hilltops now get ready to begin their quest for a sixth straight Canadian Bowl title Sunday August 18 in Winnipeg in the regular season opener against the Rifles.
The game will be broadcast on 92.9 THE BULL beginning with the pregame show at 11:30 a.m. The opening kick-off is at noon.
