The pandemic has delayed a court hearing on a lawsuit against the City of Saskatoon. It’s a class action suit filed on behalf of over 100 taxi brokers and license owners who believe the City’s Transportation Network Bylaw gives companies like UBER and Lyft an unfair advantage.
Spokesperson for the taxi owners and drivers, Scott Suppes, says Transportation Network Companies like UBER can hike fares during peak times and undercut tax rates when the demand drops, but taxi drivers have fixed fares. The suit was filed last July.
Suppes explains that to proceed, the class action must be certified which was to have happened this past June. Then the City filed a motion to dismiss the claim. The Court ordered that the motion would be jointly heard along with the certification, and that’s when the pandemic began and proceedings were adjourned for all but urgent and emergency hearings were cancelled.
suppes says joint hearings haven’t been re-scheduled yet but he expects it will be early next year.
