Multiple police agencies were involved in what RCMP describes as a dynamic incident in central Alberta that also involved shots being fired at a police truck.
The situation unfolded on Wednesday night shortly after 11 p.m. when Sylvan Lake RCMP were advised by Calgary Police that a stolen vehicle was in the area. The vehicle sped through Lacombe Police jurisdiction and was later located by Blackfalds RCMP but failed to stop and the pursuit was terminated. The vehicle was again located, a tire deflation device was used, the suspects then drove into a rural property east of Lacombe and stole another truck abandoning the first vehicle.
The Police Dog Services truck was part of the new pursuit and took bullet rounds believed to be from the suspects in the stolen truck. That’s when the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response team got involved. The vehicle was tracked to an area near Erksine and just as a police perimeter was set up, officers got word that two more vehicles had been stolen from a property in the area. Both stolen vehicles, with the aid of a stud belt, were stopped and the suspects were taken into custody shortly before 4 in the morning on Thursday.
A stolen firearm was recovered as well. RCMP say 31 year old Kenton Charles Butters was wanted on a Canada Wide Warrant for being Unlawfully at Large. He is facing 20 additional charges including discharge a firearm with intent. Alexander Michael Talbot, 28 years old, is facing four charges and Kenton Butters is also believed connected to a home invasion in Caroline, Alberta on Monday. More suspects are being sought in that case. Both accused were remanded in custody until they go to court on Monday.
