Heat warnings have been issued for a chunk of northwest Saskatchewan as well as a swathe going border to border across central Saskatchewan. The heat warnings stretch from Lloydminster through to the Battlefords over to Prince Albert then on to Melfort, Tisdale and as far east as Hudson Bay. Humidex values are factored into heat warnings.
Swift Current, Maple Creek, Shaunavon, and Val Marie are expected to be some of the hottest places in the province at 37 degrees for a forecast high today. In fact Val Marie, which dropped as low as 8 overnight, will see an almost 30 degree temperature swing.
The heatwave across the west is impacting, BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan right now and possibly Manitoba by Tuesday.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Natalie Hasell says there are people more susceptible to heat starting with older adults, infants and young children as well as those with chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular including diabetes, kidney disease, and for those dealing with mental illness, they may have difficulty because of the medications they are on.
Hasell says if you’ve noticed some areas are under a heat warning, even though the forecast daytime high is lower than elsewhere in the province, it’s because the thresholds are different based how hot certain geographic areas tend to get.
The SPCA also reminds pet owners that you can’t leave your pet in a vehicle in this kind of heat, as well, if it is too hot on the pavement for your bare skin then it is too hot for the pads of pet’s foot. If you see an animal in a vehicle and are concerned for its welfare, contact the Saskatoon SPCA.
