Saskatchewan’s NDP Leader has sent a letter to the Premier calling for Legislature to be reconvened, so there can be discussions about back to school plans, passing legislation on suicide prevention and a fiscal update that includes the financial projections that were omitted from this year’s budget.
Ryan Meili says parents and families are struggling, trying to decide if they should send their kids to school, and the information to date from the government has done nothing to alleviate their stress or the stress of teachers, education assistants and other staff.
Meili says some of the challenges are overcrowded classrooms and overstretched budgets.
The Premier has talked about class sizes being reduced by moving students to less populated schools or classes, but Meili says that answer is too vague. (CJWW)
Premier’s Response:
Premier Scott Moe says parents will learn more about their school-specific action plans on Wednesday, August 26th.
The ministry of education has also provided school divisions with information on the application process for the $40 million the government is offering for the back to school plan.
The government is expecting to have a supply of two million masks in place for distribution by August 25.
As well, finance minister Donna Harpauer will be providing a first quarter fiscal update on August 27.
That update will include the $40 million in additional funds for education, and also the latest budget figures from the ministry of health.
With the first quarter fiscal update, Saskatchewan will become the first jurisdiction to provide detailed medium-term outlooks and projections factoring the impact of COVID-19 in Canada.
Moe did not commit to reconvening the Legislature at this time. (CKRM)
