Back on Saturday, it was the third event of the season at Wyant Group Raceway.

Both Western Speed Association Super Late Model Series feature races were held without caution flags, with Tim Kammer and Matthew Shirley taking the checkered flags in the A and B races, respectively. Other feature winners were Sam Howlett of Saskatoon in the Bandolero division, Lachlyn Anderson of Martensville in the Mini Stock class, Brennan Kirton of Saskatoon in the Pro Truck division and Blake Erb of Warman in the Sask Legends class. Results for 8/22/2020 – Wyant Group Raceway – Saskatoon, SK

The skies may have been threatening for a while but it was all friendly rivalry on the track at Wyant Group Raceway Saturday night.

Temperatures soared to over 30 degrees in the afternoon with high winds.

It cooled to 18 by the final features, but the action on the track didn’t cool.

Only six late models were out for the Provincial Vodka Western Speed Association series, but the sold out limited crowd was on the edge of their seats right to the end of their two 50 laps feature races.

After an accident left him on the sidelines last year, Tim Kammer from Moose Jaw took the checkered flag in the first 50 lap Provincial Vodka WSA feature, 2/10ths of a second ahead of Matthew Shirley. Kammer took the lead early and put some distance between himself and the rest of the field.

First Jared Reddekopp and Dave Bone battled for second. Shirley waited them out, eventually getting around Reddekopp and then Bone. But with 15 laps to go there was just too much track between Shirley and Kammer and Shirley had just used up a bunch of his tires working to second.

Shirley caught Kammer and got his nose beside him a couple of times, but it was Kammer’s night for a feature win.

Fastest lap times from the Feature A were used to line up cars for the second feature. Jim Gaunt was fighting a bad tire through the first race, meaning his fastest lap of 14.902 seconds gave him the pole for the second race. Even though he left the race early, Reddekopp’s lap of

14.542 put him on the back row, inside Shirley.

Gaunt took advantage, pulling away from the field and cruised unbothered for 30 laps. Matthew Shirley had worked his way through the field and started knocking on Gaunt’s door about lap 30, slipping by in lap 35.

Jared eventually caught up to Jim and was looking inside and out, but just couldn’t work up the speed to pass. Although Shirley had almost a four second lead at the finish, Gaunt finished only 0.29 seconds ahead of Reddekopp.

Both Provincial Vodka feature races and the WSA heat race were caution free.

In the Tiger Automotive Pro Trucks, Brennan Kirton was on fire as he claimed wins in both the first heat race and the Tiger Automotive feature. Cole Nixey took the second heat.

Mitch Bone looked like he might have something for Kirton near the finish line, but it was not to be as Kirton finished 0.6 seconds ahead of Bone. Bill Zubrecki finished third, trailing by almost lap.

The Golf’s Car Wash Mini Stocks were a little more predictable and Lachlyn Anderson claimed top spot in both heats and the feature. Dorian Andr finish second in the feature with Dakota Wollf rounding out the top three.

The Earthworks Sask Legends made their first appearance at Wyant Group Raceway, creating a buzz around the raceway (pun intended). Black Erb, used to winning races only saw top spot on the podium once through the night.

Jody Stewart from Kerrobert at 16.613 seconds timed in ahead of Erb’s

16.653 seconds. In the first heat race, Darrell Buckingham from Calgary beat Black to the line. In the second heat it was Jody Stewart getting to the finish first.

In the Earthworks Sask Legends feature race, Blake Erb got to see his first Saskatoon checkered flag, finishing the 35 lap race 0.139 seconds ahead of Darrell Buckingham. Jody Stewart was third, Ty Stewart fourth and Scott Kallal rounded out the top five headed to tech.

Then there was the Bandoleros. Oh, there were Bandoleros. The Schira Subways Bandoleros had thirteen cars out Saturday, seven of them in from Cranbrook BC. When you have that many cars it is often faster to split them into heats and run four races instead of two. That’s exactly what we did, grouping the cars with faster laps time in practice together in Heat A, and the seven runner-up cars into Group B.

In Heat 1A Hunter Hrisook from Cranbrook was first to the line ahead of Hayden Hoogeveen. Heat 1B saw Tripp Rothwell beat Jordy Habart, both from Cranbrook, to the finish.

Saskatoon’s Sam Howlett won Heat 2A, just ahead of Hayden Hoogeveen.

Heat 2B saw Cranbrook buddies Max Thielen and Jordy Habart battling to the line, with Thielen just ahead at the flag.

Then came the Schira Subways feature race. 13 Bandoleros, varying degrees of experience, many drivers never being on the track together, even a couple who were experiencing their first Bandolero race. Oh, the feature.

In the end though, there were eight cautions, all minor… minor contact and spin outs. Hayden Hoogeveen from Biggar beat Sam Howlett to the line in an exciting finish, with Chase Rothwell, Hunter Hrisook and Tripp Rothwell, all from Cranbrook, rounding out the top five.

Hoogeveen’s car was later disqualified in post race technical inspection when it was found one of the manifold gaskets didn’t meet specification.

Next weekend is the annual Race For The Cure, with the Shell V-Power Sportsman, and all race teams, raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society. The Earthworks Sask Legends are back, along with the Annugas Compression Canadian Super Trucks and the Golf’s Car Wash Street Stocks.

Racing is Saturday, August 29, with the front gates open at 4:00pm and the first green flag at 6:05pm

Re-open Saskatchewan restrictions continue with tickets going on sale Tuesday.
