While Saskatchewan’s COVID-19 numbers are low right now, all the other western provinces are seeing increases, so Premier Scott Moe is urging residents not to travel outside of the province if you don’t have to.
He adds that Saskatchewan continues to see cases linked to inter-provincial travel, either by vehicle or by air travel.
Moe suggests the best way to keep the virus from spreading in schools is to keep it at bay in communities.
Saskatchewan has the capacity for 3,000 COVID-19 tests a day, and the goal is 4,000 although there is a challenge with not enough laboratory technicians.
The recent announcement that more students will be admitted to the 2 year program for Sask Polytech doesn’t help in the short term, but Moe says the Saskatchewan Health Authority is finding other solutions.
Where lab techs aren’t available, on a temporary basis, the SHA is looking at other disciplines they can procure to do the work.
Moe says we may not need to do 4,000 tests a day, but he feels it’s prudent to have that capacity should we need it.
Saskatchewan will be taking up the offer of a free COVID-19 alert app from the federal government.
Premier Moe considers it an additional tool to ensure flattening the curve, especially now heading into the fall with more indoor activities and school beginning again.
He hopes it will be available for those that choose to use it over the next couple of weeks.
The federal government says the app has no way of knowing your location, your name or address, your phone’s contacts, your health information or the information of anyone you’re near.
