A federal government Surplus Food Rescue Program will benefit Indigenous communities in Saskatchewan. Up to $10.8 million dollars will be provided for the rescue of up to 1.4 million pounds of freshwater fish from inland lakes of Canada. Working with the Freshwater Fisk Marketing Corporation, the surplus product will be distributed to more than 75 Indigenous communities throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the North. The surpluses were created because of the COVID-19 pandemic which largely shut down the restaurant and hospitality industry, leaving many producers without a key market for their food commodities.
