Normally, this would be the weekend of the Fireworks Festival in Saskatoon, but because of the pandemic, that has been cancelled. However, if you decide to discharge your own display of fireworks, the Saskatoon Fire Department has some safety reminders for you.
First, low-hazard fireworks can only be discharged on private property between dusk and 11 p.m. There are risks when it comes to this activity. The Fire Department cautions everyone to choose your location wisely, ensuring it is free of overhead obstructions, has enough room side-to-side and is a safe distance from combustible materials. Familiarize yourself with the space requirements for the type of firework you have, because they vary.
When you are ready to go, make sure it’s not windy and everyone is far enough away to watch the display, and always have a water supply available just in case.
If you decide to have a fireworks display, you are the one responsible for any debris that may land on your spectators or another’s property.
Wait a half hour before beginning the clean-up process and the Fire Department suggests disposing of the used fireworks and debris in a pail of water.
There is no fire ban in Saskatoon right now, but elsewhere, check in your community for information specific to your area.
