The provincial government announcing $51-million in extra funding for schools on the first day back to school is welcomed, but the timing is off.
That’s according to NDP Education Critic Carla Beck, who suggests that money should have been allocated a month or 2 ago, and not piecemeal over the last few weeks.
She says it has led to more stress for parents, teachers and school divisions.
Beck also believes some of the money should have gone toward a substitute teacher budget, because she expects there will be more need when dealing with COVID-19 safety precautions.
She says she has already heard from some substitute teachers that they are already booked for the first weeks of school.
