Premier Scott Moe has sent a letter to the Prime Minister with a few suggestions prior to the Throne Speech on September 23rd. He explains that because Saskatchewan has no representation in the caucus, he wants to ensure the priorities of Saskatchewan are heard.
Moe points out to Justin Trudeau that although the federal government has committed billion of dollars to support Canadians through the pandemic, Saskatchewan residents are inequitably impacted by the added costs of the federal carbon tax. He urges the tax to be paused until the Supreme Court has rendered its decision on the constitutionality of the tax. The case will be heard over 3 days beginning September 22nd.
Moe also asks Justin Trudeau to make a strong commitment to a sustainable oil and gas sector in his Throne Speech. When it comes to climate action, he reminds the Prime Minister about Saskatchewan’s partnership with Ontario, New Brunswick and soon Alberta, on the research and deployment of nuclear Small Modular Reactors, and the provincial government’s plan to double the amount of irrigable land.
Moe also mentioned that since March 1st, only 3 municipal projects worth roughly $3.8-million have been approved by the federal government from the Canada Infrastructure Plan, with another 123 projects waiting for approval.
The Premier’s last request is for the federal government to address the federal transfer inequalities. Moe says the Fiscal Stabilization Program is broken and western Canadians have legitimate, long-standing concerns regarding the federal equalization formula.
