Saskatoon had its first case of Dutch Elm Disease 5 years ago, and now another tree has been found.
Entomologist Jeff Boone the City’s DED Response Plan requires immediate removal of any positive trees, so that will begin Wednesday where the tree is located in the Montgomery neighbourhood.
Inspectors will follow up and search for stored firewood in yards in Montgomery, Fairhaven, Meadowgreen and the South Industrial area to pinpoint a source.
Boone says the disease was introduced into North America in the 1930s and has wiped out millions of elms across Canada and the United States.
It has been in Saskatchewan since the 1980s.
The symptoms are difficult to pinpoint in the fall. They include wilting, yellow leaves that will then curl and turn brown.
Anyone who notices this on an elm tree is asked to call Urban Biological Services – 306-975-2890.
