It was a busy day for mayoral candidates in Saskatoon, with multiple media conferences being held across the city. The Saskatoon Civic Election is coming up Monday November 9th.
Charlie Clark Launches Re-Election Platform
Charlie Clark announced his platform for re-election Friday. Clark says his focus if re-elected will be to build a strong economic future and to make sure no one is left behind.
Atchison Will Not Vote For a Tax Increase
Former mayor and candidate Don Atchison, maintained his stance that he will not vote for a tax increase during a media conference Friday. Atchison says the city must hold the line at zero.
Atchison says work on the new library needs to take a pause until the City Solicitor and City Clerk give a ruling on funding. He expanded on a master plan for downtown including a commitment to the entertainment center and the city yards in a second stage. Atchison spoke on finding a new solution for the lighthouse, and said we will know that the downtown is safe for everyone when mothers can bring their children with them and feel safe.
Norris Criticizes Clark and Atchison
Mayoral candidate Rob Norris took the time to criticize Charlie Clark’s stance on the $134 million downtown library project Friday. Norris says he is hearing that people cannot believe the project is moving forward, especially in the times we are in, at what he calls an astronomical price tag and list of amenities. Norris added that Clark mentioned nothing about tax relief during his conference on Friday. Norris says Clark is trying to defend his record on property taxes while people are struggling. Norris says Clark has offered flimsy reasons to keep going with big tax increases.
Norris also criticized Don Atchison, saying the former mayor is out of touch and trying to play catch-up regarding the library project. Norris claimed that ten days ago Atchison stood with Charlie Clark in favour of the library project and says now he hears Atchison has hit reverse.
Other Happenings from the Mayoral Race
Candidate Cary Tarasoff held a media conference Friday to address issues facing Saskatoon including taxation, the proposed new library, the Arbutus Solair Project, water costs, future development planning and sidewalks.
The final two candidates are Zubair Sheikh and Mark Zielke.
