The Saskatoon Police Service says it decided to execute the operational plan after receiving numerous complaints in the last several months which cited vehicles gathering in various locations in the city, lack of physical distancing during the pandemic, aggressive driving and noise.
Police say in one particular incident on September 13 a person reported losing control and colliding with a cement barrier as a result of racing. Thankfully the person was not seriously injured. In all, police received more than 25 calls for service from the public because of aggressive driving behaviours during the two-day Operational Plan.
The two day operation plan was executed last weekend and tracked aggressive driving behaviour and noise to several planned gatherings. Enforcement was conducted in seven different locations with police finding that many participants would re-group at other locations after encountering officers. The Air Support Unit noted that one location had about 140 vehicles congregating and observed many of them racing and driving in a dangerous manner that posed a risk to public safety.
The following are the results of the two day operational plan:
89 tickets
15 vehicle equipment regulation infractions
6 x 30 day vehicle impoundments
5 vehicles were seized for racing
3 x full vehicle inspections
1 x 30 day suspension
1 x Criminal Code charge for Dangerous Driving
