The Public Health Agency says the Salmonella outbreak linked to red onions from the United States appears to be over and the outbreak investigation has been closed. Onions imported from the U.S. are no longer under investigation.
The outbreak of infections occurred in seven provinces.
Trace-back information identified that the red onions were coming from Thomson International Inc. of Bakersfield, California.
Onions grown in Canada were not associated with this outbreak.
In total, there were 515 confirmed cases of Salmonella linked to the outbreak. Saskatchewan had 35 cases. The largest number of cases was in Alberta at 293.
Individuals became sick between mid-June and late August. Seventy-nine individuals were hospitalized. Three people died, but Salmonella did not contribute to the cause of these deaths.
