NDP Leader Ryan Meili says if elected his party will hire an additional 700 home care staff. These employees would provide medical, cleaning, cooking and repair assistance so seniors can still live independently. He says the New Democratic Party is committed to having seniors stay in their homes as long as possible.
Meili committed $50 million to the initiative and highlighted what the NDP feels are SaskParty decisions making it harder for seniors to stay in their own homes like the elimination of the Saskatchewan Hearing Aid Plan, the elimination of a provincial support for seniors living with disabilities and changes to the Seniors Drug Plan which removed access to the plan for over 6,000 middle-class seniors and raised the costs for those still eligible for the plan. And Meili pointed to the sell-off of STC which he says was relied heavily upon by seniors.
The NDP initiative would include hiring of approximately 200 certified care aides, 100 licenced practical nurses, 70 registered nurses, 100 caretakers, 40 carpenters, 50 cooks, 80 groundskeepers, and 60 occupational therapists.
