Because there are no breakfast or lunch programs at schools during the summer, the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre and the Milk for Children program welcomes the support of SaskMilk. For the third year in a row, SaskMilk has made it possible to double the amount of milk given to children 17 years and younger and pregnant and nursing mothers.
Food Bank Executive Director, Laurie O’Connor, says summer can be a difficult time for families in need because there is no school support, so being able to have some extra nutrition through the Milk for Children program is integral. Last year the Milk for Children program provided over 97-thousand-600 litres of milk to Saskatoon and area families.
O’Connor says summer is a busy time for the Food Bank, but this year there has been a noticeable spike, particularly in the last 3 weeks, which is concerning. She wonders if it might be signalling an even busier fall.
