The Provincial Association of Transition Houses and Services of Saskatchewan is looking for more signatures, before November 5th,on a petition that asks the federal government to amend privacy legislation which would then enable the RCMP to participate in Clare’s Law.
The petition to the Minister of Justice states that Saskatchewan has the highest rate of domestic violence among all provinces.
Right now, Clare’s Law allows only municipal police forces to inform at-risk individuals of an intimate partner’s past violent or abusive behavior.
Section 8 of the federal legislated Privacy Act prohibits the RCMP, which falls under federal jurisdiction, from participating in Clare’s Law.
The Association is circulating the petition, in an effort to free the RCMP from being bound by the federal Privacy Act. The Association says it needs almost a dozen more signatures before the petition closes November 5th.
