During the municipal election campaign we are featuring a different candidate each day leading up to election day on November 9th.
Randy Donauer, is the incumbent in Ward 5 and says he has two main priorities, fiscal responsibility and safety.
He states he’s on the record of voting against large tax increases and believes Saskatoon needs to be back on track. He says with people trying to hold on to their jobs and pay their mortgages, now is the time for everyone to fiscally tighten their belt, including city hall.
For safety, Donauer says he is hearing a lot of concerns at the door of downtown safety, safety in the neighbourhood and traffic safety. Donauer suggests a few years ago downtown was thriving when the economy was booming and people want to feel safe again. He believes services need to be created so people aren’t living in the streets or wandering through neighbourhoods. Donauer would like to tackle traffic issues like dangerous intersections, speeding and street racing.
Donauer says he has lived in the ward for the past 30 years, which gives him an advantage on city council. When theirs a problem in the ward he knows about it because he and his families are on the same streets, sidewalks, and parks as his neighbours. Donauer has a background in both the public sector and in business which Donauer says gives him the insight on the balance between the need for infrastructure and services. He says it he understands that the taxpayers are not a bottomless bit of money, especially during the pandemic. Donauer says the city needs to watch the bottom line and focus on the basics.
