The city of Saskatoon is reporting that some residents might notice some temporary odors due to methane gas drilling at the landfill.
New wells are being drilled at the Saskatoon Regional Waste Management Centre to expand the landfill gas well field, and to capture more methane from decomposing waste.
The city says depending on wind direction and speed this may cause noticeable odors in surrounding areas. However, they say the work will have no impact on air quality and will not pose any health risks to residents. Drilling is expected to last until late November.
The landfill gas collection and power generation system reduces over 50,000 tonnes of Greenhouse Gas per year, and enough energy to power 1,200 home each year, generating approximately $1.3 million for the city from sales to SaskPower.
