The federal government is taking measures to reduce driver fatigue in the trucking industry and is mandating the use of electronic logging devices. They are tamper-resistant and are integrated into commercial vehicle engines. The devices are intended to ensure that commercial drivers stay within their daily driving limit and accurately log their working hours.
The government says the requirement is the result of longstanding collaboration among all levels of government. But, the feds also nod to the Saskatchewan Coroners Service and its recommendations following the tragic collision involving the Humboldt junior hockey team.
Transport Canada says it is committed to meeting the deadline for logging devices of June 12th next year.
