Waste diversion programs are set to wrap up another season in the city.
The Household Hazard Waste Drop-off averaged 576 per event this season and received a total of 135,115 kilograms of hazardous waste. This was a significant increase over 2019 despite two events being cancelled due to the pandemic. The final HHW drop off day is Sunday from 9 am to 3:30 p.m. at the Civic Operations Centre on Valley Road. The city says measures are being take to accommodate high volumes of traffic but residents are reminded to consider other means of safe disposal for common household items like batteries, paint and engine oil.
The Green Cart program will wrap up from November 2nd to 6th, with the city saying subscribers will receive a bonus Green Cart collection on their scheduled day, regardless of when their previous collection was performed. The city recommends placing carts at the curb by 7 a.m. to ensure collection. This season their were 1,400 new subscribers to the program, which now serves 11,180 households. 3.1 million kilograms of food and yard waste were diverted from the landfill this way.
Registration for the 2021 season will begin on January 4th in the new year.
The two compost depots welcomed over 65,000 vehicles so far this season. The city says 6,300 tonnes of wood was shredded into mulch at the west depot while producing 5,400 tonnes of finished screened compost for Saskatoon parks, community gardens, the Dig-Your-Own program and for bulk purchase. Saturday November 7th will be the final day for both the East and West Compost Depots as they close for the winter. Both depots are scheduled to re-open in April of 2021. The city says this will be the last chance to take advantage of the available inventory of compost and mulch at the West Depot.
