Saskatchewan’s NDP leader says this province has one of the biggest hot spots for COVID-19 in the country, per capita, and more needs to be done.
The hot spot is north and west of Prince Albert, which on the government’s COVID-19 map is North Central 1.
It includes the Premier’s hometown of Shellbrook, along with Candle Lake, Big River and Waskesiu, among other communities.
Ryan Meili says nineteen new cases were reported in that area on Thursday.
He believes during the election the Saskatchewan Party government delayed taking action to pander to those who are resistant to making the right choices.
Then, just after the election, decisions were made to bring in mandatory masking for indoor public spaces in Saskatoon, Regina, and Prince Albert, tighter restrictions were placed on nightclubs, and gathering sizes in homes were reduced to ten.
The NDP would like to see more testing with a quicker turnaround for results, mandatory masking extended to areas of the province where there are significant increases in numbers, and smaller class sizes, all in an effort to bring the COVID-19 numbers down.
Premier Scott Moe’s response is that Meili’s allegations are irresponsible and false.
He says the SaskParty government has consistently acted on the advice of public health officials throughout the pandemic and he has no time for ill-advised attempts to politicize the government’s response to COVID-19.
