The provincial government is giving jurors a pay raise to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to perform jury duty, regardless of their financial circumstances.
As of September 1st, jurors sitting on civil and criminal juries will receive $110 a day, as opposed to the current $15 a day for civil trials and $80 for criminal trials.
The amendments to the Jury Act also include child care being reimbursed up to $40 a day, if it’s a new expense. That means if you were already paying daily childcare, it wouldn’t count, but if you didn’t have child care before jury duty, it would be included. Jurors can also apply for up to $80 a day for elder or other dependant care expenses.
The $15 a day for prospective jurors at a civil jury selection is being removed.
