Saskatchewan physicians have sent a letter to the Premier in a call to combat the rapid spread of COVID-19.
The letter from 260 doctors states that in the last 30 days the number of active COVID-19 cases in Saskatchewan has increased 700%, causing hospitals to become full and ICU’s at 130% capacity due to COVID-19 admissions.
Physicians are concerned the province is losing the battle with the virus and if more is not done it will lead to overflowing hospitals, cancelled surgeries, overwhelmed healthcare providers and needless deaths.
The letter points to models of successful government interventions that could be applied in Saskatchewan available from Atlantic Canada, New Zealand, Australia, South Korea, and more. The letter concludes saying that both action and inaction will be criticized, and physicians are humbly asking Premier Scott Moe to act with sufficient force to reverse the rising daily case counts while also detailing how and when the province would escalate interventions even further.
The letter was sent to Premier Scott Moe, Paul Merriman, Dr. Shahab and the opposition NDP, and included the names of 260 physicians from across the province. A recent update on twitter shows the number of physician signatures is now closer to 310.
