Indigenous architect Alfred Waugh with Formline Architecture will lead the team that designs the new Saskatoon downtown library. The desire expressed by Saskatoon Public Library is that the design incorporate Indigenous and non-Indigenous leadership, values, history and ways of knowing into the state-of-the-art library. Formline is indigenous owned and says that it specializes in culturally sensitive and environmentally responsible designs. Waugh sees the library as a place where oral tradition, storytelling, and the written word coexist.
Community consultations on the process will begin early next year. The library is expected to open in 2026 at 321 2nd Avenue North.
Other partners on the design team are Chevalier Morales Architectes, and Architecture 49.
