When it comes to scoring tech talent in Canada, Saskatoon does not do particularly well. CBRE Research has taken a look at the top 20 cities in the country, ranking them on competitive advantage as well as appeal to tech workers and employers. The big winners are Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver, ranking 1, 2, and 3 in that order. Saskatoon is in the back of the pack coming in at 18; even Regina ranks higher at 16.
In terms of tech talent as a percentage of total employment, Regina ranks 13th at 4.8 per cent. Saskatoon is last at 3.4 per cent. The report says tech talent growth in Saskatoon is up 20.5 per cent over the five years from 2014 to 2019. In the same period, it has declined in Regina by 10.4 per cent. There are about 5,300 tech workers in Saskatoon and about 6,000 in Regina.
