At a special meeting of City Council on Monday, the newly formed council passed a report that could see Saskatoon Light and Power customers receive the same rebate being offered to SaskPower customers by the provincial government.
The Government of Saskatchewan will implement the Saskatchewan Economic Recovery Rebate on December 1st and provide the rebate until November 30, 2021. The Rebate will be 10% on electrical charges, which includes service, electric, and demand charges. It will not apply to the Municipal Surcharge or the Carbon Tax Charge, but will apply to all customer classes. Monday’s report to council was to ensure Saskatoon Light & Power (SL&P) will provide an equivalent rebate for its customers and then be reimbursed by the provincial government on a monthly basis.
Angela Gardiner, General Manager of Utilities and Environment says the rebate will also apply to all civic facilities and programs resulting in a savings of almost $1.2 million to mill rate programs and just over $600 thousand to utility programs. Savings, she says, that will be included in the 2021 budget.
Council passed the report unanimously and a amended bylaw will be voted on during next week’s city council meeting. If passed the rebate will apply to even those paying the minimum fee with SL&P.
