A doctor and researcher at McGill University conducting a study on the affects the pandemic for those with dementia says she wants to make things better.
Dr. Isabelle Vedel believes people with dementia have been doubly impacted because they are at high risk for serious illness or death from COVID-19 because of their age and they are vulnerable to the consequences of the loss of social contact and stimulation.
The Saskatchewan Health Quality Council is contributing to this study by gathering the provincial data on hospital admissions, visits to the doctor and homecare services. Alberta, Quebec, and Ontario are also taking part, as is France.
The CEO of the Health Quality Council, Tracey Sherin says researchers will be comparing to see if there are differences when comparing before and during the pandemic in the number of health care and home care visits. The research team is also interview people living with dementia and their caregivers to get a better sense of how they have managed throughout the pandemic. Sherin expects a full analysis in about a year.
