Statistics Canada says that experimental indexes of economic activity show that all provinces experienced growth over the summer as COVID-19 restrictions relaxed. However, economic activity in August in most provinces remained below that registered in February. Oil producing provinces like Saskatchewan and Alberta suffered a double hit as they had to deal with not only the onset of the pandemic but also a reduction of oil prices.
The steep decline in economic activity across the country saw the largest declines in Alberta and Saskatchewan with Manitoba largely unaffected. The indexes show that the level of economic activity in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and British Columbia were the most impacted when compared to February.
