The amount of habitat the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation now manages has grown by 800 acres, thanks to a recent donation.
The land is prime wildlife habitat, donated by the late Don Kowalski of Griffin, which is in southeast Saskatchewan.
He also donated $100,000 to the SWF Habitat Trust Program.
Director of Habitat Lands, Darren Newberry, says the property is native prairie grassland, which is internationally recognized as one of the most at-risk ecosystems in the world and it’s home to numerous species at risk.
Usually the donations come in quarter sections, Newberry adds, so having having 800 acres all in one chunk is exceptional.
He describes the property as a haven for local wildlife.
It will be named Dianne’s Wildlife Sanctuary after Mr. Kowalski’s sister.
