Due to COVID-19 restrictions a Christmas play, that was originally going to be put on live at the Broadway Theatre, will go virtual this week.
The Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin Theatre (GTNT), and their Christmas Comedy “Leave it to Weavers” was recorded in front of a very small audience, and will be live on Facebook and YouTube Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights at 7:30 p.m.
Director Danny Knight says the play tells the story of a family that reunites during the holidays, inadvertently shoots Rudolph the red-nose reindeer, after mistaking him for a deer and ends up having to save Christmas. Knight co-wrote the play with local comedians Ryan Moccasin, Dakota Ray Hebert and Maureen Belanger, he says it’s a fun script that people can relate to, that aims to share a little gem of knowledge here and there.
Knight says COVID restrictions brought on some challenges, including having to find clear masks for their actors, and getting the show filmed. He adds this year has been hard on everyone, including artists who have seen their opportunities taken away during the pandemic. Knight suggests it’s important to be able to share something else that’s not dread and reminds us of the good times we’ve had and can have in the future.
The play stars Jennifer Dawn Bishop, Lancelot Knight, Dalton Lightfoot, Aaron Marie Nepoose and Cory Dallas Standing.
