The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre’s holiday campaign still has a few weeks in which residents can donate food and funds for those in need within the community.
Executive Director Laurie O’Connor, says the response for the All of Us! Unite Against Hunger campaign has been overwhelming so far. O’Connor says they are getting closer to previous goals, a little sooner than they normally would, as we approach the end of December. She adds that folks are really concerned about their friends and neighbours who may be struggling and looking for ways to support in the community, and they are always thankful for those who step up.
O’Connor says while the food bank didn’t really set a goal this year, due to the uncertainty of the pandemic, in the past they’ve looked to raise about $500,000 in the 6 week period. O’Connor explains the Food Bank has a most wanted food items list, if people want to donate to hampers at grocery stores, some stores even have pre-made bags. O’Conner states foods that pack a nutritional punch, are very helpful and baby food and formula is often needed this time of year.
O’Connor says while the food bank is open and taking donations, using the grocery store hampers, or donating online might be safer at this time.
The SFGLC’s most wanted food items include canned fruits and vegetable, hearty soups and stews, whole grain pastas and cereals, canned protein, peanut butter and 100% fruit juice.
