About half of the Royal Canadian Legions Branches across the country received financial support from a federal aid package today (Mon), including La Ronge Branch 371.
The Legion’s National Headquarters says just over $7.2-million was distributed to 701 Branches that had applied for financial assistance through Veterans Affairs Canada.
President of the La Ronge Branch, Shaune Lapworth, says with restrictions on gatherings there wasn’t enough income so they had to cancel their Wi-Fi and phone, lower the heat and unplug the appliances.
Now, with almost $9,000 in new funding, they can keep their doors open.
Yorkton Branch 77 was granted $15,000 to cover things like insurance and utilities.
The Legion received $14-million out of a $20-million package earmarked for Veteran Organizations as part of Bill C-4, which was approved this fall.
The Legion’s headquarters will offer a second opportunity in January to Branches that couldn’t make the December deadline.
