Saskatoon’s fire chief doesn’t believe needle collection will be a problem after the safe drug consumption site opens in January. Morgan Hackl says the department’s quick-response protocol should help address any increase in used needles around the city. Hackl says the department’s policy is to dispatch two firefighters to the scene of any reported needle and get it picked up as soon as possible. The city’s fire chief also points to the department’s 21-year relationship with the many organizations that make up Needle Safe Saskatoon. The facility in the former Pleasant Hill Bakery is due to begin operations in the new-year. Aids Saskatoon Executive Director Jason Mercredi said last week that patrols of the neighbourhood including school yards would be stepped up after the facility opens.
