Eighteen drivers will be ringing in the new year with either suspensions or charges, after being found under the influence of alcohol or drugs at New Year’s Eve checkpoints.
Members of the Saskatoon Police Service conducted a large scale sobriety checkpoint with the Corman Park Police, Saskatchewan Highway Patrol and Canadian Pacific Police.
Police report, 13 of the drivers were under the influence of either cannabis or cocaine and 5 were dealt with for alcohol related impairment. In all, 18 vehicles were impounded for various periods of time.
Additionally, 2 people were charged under the Cannabis Control Act and 1 under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act. About 350 vehicles were checked in total.
Volunteers from the Saskatoon Chapter of MADD were also on hand to thank sober drivers and handed out 300 coupons for free pizza as well as other gifts to sober drivers.
