The NDP opposition says that Sask. Party MLAs voted against a motion Thursday at the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, that called on the Provincial Auditor to do a special investigation of the COVID-19 outbreak at Extendicare Parkside in Regina.
Regina University MLA Aleana Young says, “It’s shameful to see the Sask Party committee members vote against this motion.” She says, “People have died. The families who have lost loved ones deserve answers.”
NDP Seniors Critic Matt Love says, “Since the fall, more than 200 residents and staff have tested positive with COVID-19, and at least 41 residents have died. 41 deaths in one care home is horrifying.” He says that it’s now up to Premier Scott Moe and his cabinet to show leadership and call a full public inquiry.
However, Minister responsible for Seniors Everett Hindley says, “Our government agrees that the outbreak should be investigated by an independent office of the Legislative Assembly, but that such a review fits within the mandate of the Provincial Ombudsman.” He says, “In the coming days, the Government of Saskatchewan will be formally asking the Provincial Ombudsman to undertake an investigation into the outbreak and subsequent events that occurred at Extendicare Parkside.” He says that it is their expectation that that Extendicare, the Saskatchewan Health Authority, and the Ministry of Health will fully comply with the investigation, and the government commits to releasing the investigation report following its conclusion.
