The Saskatchewan Government and General Employees’ Union is raising concerns over rising violence and rival gang feuds in provincial correctional, centres. President Bob Bymoen says, “We are hearing from our members that these centres are a powder keg waiting to explode.” He says staff do not feel safe and management won’t listen to concerns. The Saskatoon Correctional Centre recently had two violent incidents which injured five inmates. The union says other facilities are seeing a rise in violence with as many as three or four inmate assaults a day. Bymoen says overcrowding and lack of staff are creating as very volatile situation. SGEU is calling on the Ministry of Corrections and Policing to invest in more staffing and deal with overcrowding.
