Many Saskatchewan businesses will have trouble adapting to Federal Labour Code changes that went into effect September 1st. That’s the feeling of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business about new scheduling regulations in federally regulated industries like transportation and seed mills. Senior Policy Analyst Emilie Hayes says it will be exceedingly difficult for trucking companies to give 96-hours-notice of schedules and 24-hour notice of shift changes when drivers don’t often know their assignments until the afternoon before hitting the road. Hayes feels the new rules are designed for larger office-related businesses and will make life tough for small operators especially in rural Saskatchewan. She figures the changes will increase red-tape and costs for small business owners who don’t have the staff to respond in the regulated time period when workers calls in sick. Even though grain elevator operators have been given a transition period, Hayes says they too will have a tough time with the new rules.
